David Davis: EU shouldn’t ‘cherry pick’ on trade deal

The U.K.’s Brexit Secretary David Davis predicted more “thunder and lightning” in the next phase of talks with Brussels and told the EU not to “cherry pick” over the terms of a trade deal.

“The negotiations about the future will not be straightforward. They will generate the same public thunder and lightning that we have seen in the past year,” Davis wrote in the Telegraph.

He said he believed the talks would ultimately be successful because the future of Europe “is best served by strong and successful relationships.”

Brussels has repeatedly told Britain that it cannot “cherry pick” in the talks by seeking to keep elements of EU membership that it likes and discard those that it does not. But, in the article published late Monday, Davis turned that phrase back at Brussels, whose chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said a future trade deal between Britain and the EU will not include financial services.

“Given the strength and breadth of our links, a deal which took in some areas of our economic relationship but not others would be, in the favoured phrase of EU diplomats, cherry picking,” Davis wrote.

Davis also said Britain aimed to “place itself at the cutting edge of new technologies and the regulatory regimes they will require.”
