Ditte Juul-Jørgensen

The glue that holds together the mighty machine of EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager is her fellow Dane Ditte Juul-Jørgensen. If Vestager has a shot at the European Commission presidency, she’ll have Juul-Jørgensen (and communications adviser Christina Holm-Eiberg) to thank. Juul-Jørgensen worked previously as a Commission trade policy manager and is a keen member of an exclusive book club for Brussels powerbrokers. Vestager said that when she moved to Brussels she “didn’t know anyone” but it took just one interview to know she’d found her perfect chief of staff. “Under Ditte, people grow all the time,” Vestager said, crediting her for efficiently managing the massive load of cases her team has to handle. When it comes to dealing with the companies and governments in the Comissioner’s line of fire, Juul-Jørgensen “understands people by listening completely seriously to their points,” said Vestager, adding that Juul-Jørgensen is famous among her colleagues for her sense of humor and always being early: “She sets her watch five minutes early.”
